My new work is a conscious
attempt to return to aesthetic ground that is involved more in a personal
philosophical quest that is concerned with the art process as a form of profound
inquiry and problem solving as opposed to much of my previous work that was, at
heart, concerned with a visual language that was ideologically confrontational.
The formal concerns in my latest work address the dynamic tensions generated
between abstract and figurative elements of the forms and the painted surfaces
which (hopefully) establish tensions and a sense of vitality not unlike musical
counterpoint.
Additionally, this new work rigorously addresses the difficulty of making an
object intellectually and psychologically convincing without utilizing the
current predisposition towards large-scale or installation sculpture. The
challenge is to work on an intimate, personal scale and create an object which
nevertheless has an intense presence about it.
Steve is very active in the ceramic world,
aside from being involved in NCECA
