DESCRIPTION OF BOOK:

This is a translation of Virgil, in a large format edition. A beautiful livre d’artiste by the painter Jean Commère (1920-1986), illustrating the hitherto unpublished French-language translation of Virgil’s Georgics by the poet André Berry. No. 196 (from a total edition of 211), signed by the artist, Commè re and by the publisher, Pierre de Tartas. Illustrations include cover, 6 double-pages in color, 3 single pages in color, 6 double-pages in b/w, 7 single-pages in b/w, 6 vignettes. The lithographs were printed by J. Ballon. Presented as loose leaves in the original lithographed paper cover and the publisher’s orange cloth-covered box.


There are 126 pages of text.

There are 29 plates.

The book is 11“ wide x 14 1/2“ high.

The box is 12” wide x 15 ¾ “ high, and 2” deep.
CONDITION OF BOOK:
This book cover shows signs of wear. There are small tears at the front and back of the spine, top and bottom. Stains on the front and back, and scuffing. The inside of the box is in better condition, the “suede like” lining is clean and soft.

The unbound manuscript inside in in very good condition. The original tan cover wrapping the entire volume is in very god condition. The edges are deckled. On the front of the tan wrap is a small white area, but I cannot tell if it is a spot, or if it is just inherent in the paper making process. There is slight foxing on the back of the tan wrap. The inside pages are clean and crisp, a lovely publication.
