Jerry Rothman is a leading figure in post-World War II American ceramics. Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1933, Rothman received his B.A. from the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles and his M.F.A. from the Otis Art Institute in L.A. He worked in Japan as a sculptor and designer for two years, from 1958-1960, after which he returned to the United States. He taught ceramics at the University of Iowa in Iowa City and at California State University, Fullerton.
Rothman belonged to the Otis group that worked with Peter Voulkos. Sky Pot was produced during this period with Voulkos, and is representative of his explorations with vessels and pots in this era. On the front of the piece Rothman has used a colorful sand glazed paint to create abstract, cloud-like forms that border on biomorphic shapes. The loose form of the vessel is reflective of his explorations with the medium and characterized the working style of the Otis group.
