In going through some drawers recently I came upon this group
of prints below by Carl from the early 1970's. They are all bon-a-tirer prints (right to
print) lithographs from Landfall Press that Lakeside purchased directly from
them in the mid '70's. A bon-a-tirer print is the final print pulled
before it is decided that the plate is "done" and is ready to use to pull
the edition. All the following are from this series.
BFA: Art Institute of Chicago and
University of Chicago
Carl E. Schwartz is a nationally recognized painter and print-maker. His
impressive bio has lists of awards such as the "Logan Medal" from the Art
Institute of Chicago...juried and invitational exhibitions as Art Across America
sponsored by Mead Corporation...one and two person shows at Illinois State
Museum and the Art Institute's S & R Gallery in Chicago...and many major
placements in permanent collections throughout the United States, such as the
Smithsonian Institute, Kemper Insurance, AT&T, Sears, Delta Airlines, Beatrice
Foods, Universities of Iowa, North Carolina, Maine, Utah, Nevada, Minnesota and
Chicago. He has worked with and been published by both "Readers Digest" and
"Playboy" magazines. He can be found in "Who's Who," "Who's Who In the Midwest"
and "Who's Who In American Art."
Mr. Schwartz is a realist whose work shows an influence of both abstract
expressionism and cubism. An interest in the effects of light assumes a central
importance in Carl's work and he states, "I am a painter of light. I'm intrigued
and fascinated with form. To me there are two worlds...the one we live in...and
the one that I create. Painting is the discipline by which I constantly
rediscover both of these worlds."
Mr. Schwartz taught figure drawing and painting for almost 30 years, and in 1984
he moved permanently to Florida. Only recently has he returned to teaching at
the Edison Community College and Florida Gulf Coast University and is
experiencing much enjoyment and satisfaction in watching the growth of young
artist.

Carl Schwartz, born in Detroit, Michigan, is a painter and print-maker, who
currently resides in Fort Meyers, Florida. He is a realist, whose work shows the
influence of both abstract expressionism and cubism.
For almost thirty years, Schwartz taught figure drawing and painting in Chicago
at the North Shore Art League, until moving to Florida in 1984. There he resumed
teaching at Edison Community College and at Florida Gulf Coast University. At
the home he shares with his wife Dinah Schwartz, he raises Koi, a type of
Oriental goldfish, which, along with water lilies, are often subjects in his
art.
Schwartz describes himself as a painter of light, "intrigued and fascinated with
form. To me, there are two worlds The one we live in and the one that I create.
Painting is the discipline by which I constantly rediscover both of these
worlds".
He has been the recipient of several awards, including the Logan Medal from the
Art Institute of Chicago, and his works have been exhibited at that Institutes
S&R Gallery in Chicago, as well as at the Illinois State Museum, and numerous
other shows.
His art is in many permanent collections, including The Smithsonian Institution,
and the university collections of: Michigan State, Ball State, Loyola, Nevada,
Minnesota, and Chicago. He is also in the corporate collections of: Kemper
Insurance, AT&T, Sears, Delta Airlines, and Beatrice Foods. Various periodicals
and magazines, including Readers Digest and Playboy, have published his work,
and he is listed in Who's Who in American Art. Schwartz is a member of A.P.A.
(Alliance of Professional Artists) and FLAG (Florida Artists Group).
